Ju 88 4D+BC

Ju 88 4D+BC (II/KG30) under Olt. Arno Wolf was shot down by AA fire over Loch Ewe, Scotland on 7 June 1941 but does anyone have any information of this aircrafts connection with the attack on a merchantman fifteen miles east of Cromer, Norfolk in January 1941?

I'm aware of the SS Meriones being sunk on 26th January 1941 which would seem to fit but does anyone know of any official records linking this a/c to its sinking?

Any info a bonus.

Regards

Re: Ju 88 4D+BC

Ah, 4D+BC in summer 1941 was Ju 88 A-5 W.Nr. 088 2400 (assembled by Arado), but looking at available info - in my files - likely this was not yet in service. I thus very much doupt this was the same in January. If same code, likely earlier aircraft. BTW. Unit codes were used again and again.

Re: Ju 88 4D+BC

Jim
I was referring to 2400 (4D+BC) likely not yet in service in January 1941, plenty of that range in service in May / June, as Ju 88 A-5´s around 2400 were only built in late 1940 or beginning of 1941, and it took some time assembling, flight testing and get them service ready, and be lost. Prodution wise the AFW / HFW production lines had reached numbers 2347 / 3297 on 17.12.1940.

Re: Ju 88 4D+BC

Gentleman

Thank you for your responses. I take the point that 4D+BC as a designation was re-used following the demise of a predecessor.

It was not my intention to directly link the a/c downed in Scotland in June '41 to that believed involved in an attack off Cromer on 26th Jan, although it was possible.

Rather does anyone know of an a/c 4D+BC, of whatever generation, which made such an attack? Obviously the a/c was not downed so the information may be limited.

James

Re: Ju 88 4D+BC

Sorry guys, reading comprehension problem on my part! There were 3 KG 30 machines reported lost on the 26-Jan-41, but no '4D+BC'.
