KG 77 versus 92 Sqdn - 09 November 1940
Good night to all members.
Am seeking details about the KG 77 operations on the day of 09 November 1940, most particularly about the crew and werknummer of the Ju 88 A-5 coded 3Z+CH flown by Leutnant Karl VAUPEL. It seems this Ju 88 was shot down by 92 Squadron near Dungeness (was it Sgt Jokes' claim?). Any information about the crew of Vaupel and the 92 Squadron interception, most welcomed. Adriano |

Re: KG 77 versus 92 Sqdn - 09 November 1940
1./KG77 Junkers Ju88A-5 (2191). Shot down by Sgt R.H. Fokes and Adj X. De Montbron of No.92 Squadron during sortie to London and crashed in the sea two miles off Galloways Gap, Dungeness, 10.55 a.m. FF Lt Karl Vaupel (Staffel TO) drowned, BO Obergefr Ernst Schildhauer, BF Uffz Heinrich Bergs, and BS Obergefr Heinrich Bartling all missing. Aircraft 3Z+CH 100% write-off.
Despite a search by the Dungeness lifeboat, Charles Cooper Henderson, no trace of the crew was found. The body of Karl Vaupel was washed ashore at Dungeness later that day. |

Re: KG 77 versus 92 Sqdn - 09 November 1940
Dear Peter,
Thank you for your kind assistance as well. Most interesting new information such as that Vaupel was Technical Officer and the name of Adjoint Xavier de Montbron. Only 3 machines from 92 Squadron took-off, do you happen to have the serial number of the aircraft flown by Fokes, Montbron and the other unknown pilot? One of the pictures I acquired is from Vaupel, hence my interest in knowing more about this airman. By the way, another machine from 2./KG 77 was lost that same day as well as some Do 17Z and one He 111 (all claimed by RAF airmen). Do you have the other losses for that particular day? Thank you very much. |

Re: KG 77 versus 92 Sqdn - 09 November 1940
Hi,
Fokes was flying X4024. I can't help re Montbron. Their respective combat reports for the incident don't mention a third airman flying in their section. Regards Gerry |

Re: KG 77 versus 92 Sqdn - 09 November 1940
Adriano,
I regret that I have no note of the Spitfire serials concerned. According to my notes only VOKES & de MONTBRON engaged. |
