JG 27 vs. P-38s on 21 September 1944
Gentlemen,
In the late afternoon of 21 September 1944 the Gruppen attached to JG 27 were engaging P-38s in the vicinity of Bonn, claiming six and losing seven. Of the six German claims only one was eventually confirmed. Can anybody tell me the American view of these combats ? Which unit(s) were involved, how many claims did they file, how many losses did the incur ? What was their task - where they fighter bombers and if so what were their objectives ? Any help would be gratefulla appreciated. KR Jochen Prien |

Re: JG 27 vs. P-38s on 21 September 1944
Hi Dr Prien,
Best I can help with is that serial 43-28734 of 82nd FG was lost this date. I do not know the circumstances as I haven't looked into it much so far. I offer this snippet as hopefully an inroad into your own query. Regards Nick |

Re: JG 27 vs. P-38s on 21 September 1944
It seems that the 367th FG was credited of 4 confirmed victories on that day but I found nothing (including in the Roll of Honor) in "The Dynamite Gang - The 367th Fighter Group in World War II" by Richard Groth.

Re: JG 27 vs. P-38s on 21 September 1944
The 392nd Fighter Squadron fought FW 190's near Ahrweiler around 1615 hours. Pilots were ultimately awarded 3 destroyed, one probable and one damaged, along with one FW 190 as unconfirmed destroyed and one unconfirmed damaged. In addition, Lt. Cockburn was awarded a Me 109 as unconfirmed damaged and two 393rd Fighter Squadron pilots shared in destroying a Me 109 south of Bonn. The 367th Fighter Group suffered no losses, and no P-38's were lost by the Ninth Air Force on this date, only three P-47's. If you need the scorers, I can provide the names.

One error in my previous message. There were two FW 190's awarded as unconfirmed damaged, not one.
