Re: WWII Missing Navy Airman

Hello,
I believe this was the TBM-1c from the USS Intrepid, Bu No. 16923.
One of two a/c from VT-18 lost on the 8th September, 1944.

Re: WWII Missing Navy Airman

Alex, yes that was the plane. The pilot, John Joseph Savage is still missing. The third crewman was Ora Henry Sharninghouse, Jr who was also just recovered.

Story about the recovery: https://bentprop.org/tbm-avenger-dis...use-rybarczyk/

For those with fold3 access, the Intrepid War Diary has a description starting here:

Re: WWII Missing Navy Airman

Hi Rolland and Alex. Good to see you guys here.

Some additional faces with names, via Findagrave.

LtJG John J. Savage (sadly the contributor used the declared death date rather than actual loss date; edit requested)
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56771460

ARM2 Albert Peter Rybarczyk
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56773928
Another earlier article related to recovery of ARM2 Albert “Bud” Peter Rybarczyk
http://www.heraldpalladium.com/news/...7e7a01658.html
The important aspect of this article (if not covered previously) is this detail about the pilot. "Natives later reported that the pilot, Lt. John J. Savage, swam to shore but was captured and executed by the Japanese.". As such his remains are likely buried ashore somewhere in an unmarked grave, with little hope of recovery.

AOM2 Ora H Sharninghouse, Jr (As yet no photo found/released of this Naval Aviation Gunner)

Re: WWII Missing Navy Airman

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Eugene Nink, an enlisted man who would've served with Sharninghouse and Rybarczyk aboard USS Intrepid as part of VT-18.

Mr. Nink's obituary:

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/pas...eid=sp_ommatch

An oral history conducted with Mr. Nink circa 2009 concerning his war experience:

http://www.glo.texas.gov/voices-of-v...iews/nink.html

His experience is unusual in that he was rated an Electrician as opposed to Radio or ordnance.

RIP Mr. Nink

Re: WWII Missing Navy Airman

Ora Sharninghouse, the other aircrewman who flew with John Savage, was buried earlier this month. Savage's remains still have yet to be found.
