Fg Off J G McLaughlin 609 Sqn

The above was said to be a Australian and taken POW 14 Jan 44. However, a search of the POW lists only has a J86145 Plt Off J G McLaughlan from Brandon Manitoba. Are they the same and was there an Australian connection?

Re: Fg Off J G McLaughlin 609 Sqn

Hi Chris,

John Geoffrey McLaughlin 420242, joined 609 Sqn on 18 May 1943, reported missing on 14 Jan 1944. There are some papers in his service file via National Archives Australia (page 40 onwards) regarding the mission and his eventual capture in Spain.

Regards, Drew

Thanks Drew-mystery solved. So he made it to Spain after his engine failed on 14 Jan 44 and therefore must have been interned. The reason why I asked is this is his handiwork

No problems Chris. He was one of several Australians with 609 Sqn during late 1943/early44. Impressive gun camera still!

I re-wrote the history of 609 Sqn some years ago and have a nice photo of the Australian pilot taken early 1944
