Identity of German Cross Winner?
Hi,
Just bought this portrait on Ebay with description describing flier as Oberfeldwebel Fritz Rieg from KG1. He looks like a German Cross in Gold winner - was there such a flier - I couldn't find him on the ne and what was his fate? Thanks Rick |

Re: Identity of German Cross Winner?
Yes, Fritz Rieg is listed in Sherzer's book on Luftwaffe holders of the DKiG, as John describes. He is also listed in Patzwall for the Honour Goblet when a Feldwebel, on 24 Nov 1941 and also shown as a Radio Operator. Schumann's book on Knight's Cross holders of KG 1 also shows Rieg as being awarded the DKiG as part of the Gruppenstab (Staff Flight) of I. Gruppe (sorry, no Knight's Cross!).
I cannot see Rieg on the loss lists for KG 1 so hopefully he survived (although he may have transferred to another unit post 1942). Whether the image is Fritz Rieg is a different question of course.
