world war I german equipment with interesting marking

a friend of mine has this very nice altimeter, with hand writen markings: can anyone comment ?

("Kampf Geschwader 51, Unteroffz Kohler etc.. ")

Is the date on it 3.V.40 as in 3rd May 1940?

I would rather read :

3.V.16 and not 3.V.40 (see : I attach another picture of this detail);

and this equipment looks to me rather WWI period.

So, I am puzzled;

Hi,

Thanks for the clearer picture, I agree that it is 3rd May 1916. My only thought now, as I have no idea if it would have been fitted in a particular aircraft type, is whether or not there was a Kampfgeschwader 51 at that time.

Maybe someone else may be able to assist!

Might it not be the airmans date of birth on a WW2 item.
