Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East

Thank you Col,
I looked at the AE page that you noted in case there was a typo in your post, but no it definately has (BZ576 ).
This is odd as that serial number did not seem to have been used ?
I checked AB's old and new "BA-BZ" and for unknown reason the numbers BZ569 through to BZ579 ( eleven ) were not used ? If they were then there does not look to be any record of it .
Also the Block BZ400 - BZ568 were delivered in June/July 1944. Remembering that 41-19594 event was in 1942.
Your thoughts are welcome.
Alex

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East

Alex,

Went through the same process as yourself - Inconclusive!

I also checked the following sources:

McDonnell Douglas Aircraft since 1920
Francillon,Rene J.
London:Putnam,1979
pp.289-91.

Francillon states on p.291:

A-20C-BO: One hundred and forty A-20Cs built under Lend-Lease Contract DA-1 by Boeing (serials 41-19589 to 41-19728, c/n 2885 to 3024). If the c/n's are sequential (a big "if"), 2890 equates to 41-19594.

Checked against: Boeing Aircraft since 1916/Peter M Bowers/Putnam,1989/p.277-78 - OK!

Back to "Square One" - Pickering's Log Books!

NB: Amended Data.

Col.

Thank you Col,
I also checked Ashworth name in Cornwall phone book but the number given when dialed was "unknown" so either moved or no longer with BT .
How did he come up with the BZ serial number therefore remains a mistery

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East

Alex,

Re: R. C. B. Ashworth:

S/Ldr. Rupert Christopher Bailey Ashworth, R.A.F., Rtd., aviation enthusiast and author, "Chris Ashworth", died suddenly on September 26, 2004. (Action Stations 5 & 9, RAF Coastal Command 1936-1969, etc.).

Things appear to be under control here in OZ - but far from over.

Thanks, similar sentiments.

Col.

Here is an article from August 1943, after they had both returned to the U.S.

The mission they were doing in February was a ferret mission, locating German and Italian radar sites along the Italian and Adriatic coasts. Sgt McCarty (RAF) was the specialist operating the locator equipment.

On this link: https://archive.org/stream/OnCelesti...Wings_djvu.txt

search for the phrase: Then came an unusual

There is a long interesting section on the link about Gordon and the phrase above will get you to the middle of his story at the start of the ferret mission and how it ended up in Turkey.

Thank you so much RSwank! this information clear up lot of the mystery of what this mission was all about and the circumstances that occured on that mission.

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East

Is it possible to determine which RAF unit Sgt. McCarty was operating with?
No 205 group?
376th BG and 98th BG was operating approx in same area but i wonder which RAF unit operated there too.
