Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East
Looking for info regarding RAF Airman SGT McCarty Interned in Turkey between February 15/16 1943.
In this mission McCarty was part of the crew of 345th BS, 98th BG Pilot Thomas Omohundro in B-24D 41-23763 Gump The Sniffer. Take off from RAF Gambut No 5 in Libya (LG-159) https://www.taracopp.com/98th-Bombar...1943/i-HSbkkHN https://www.taracopp.com/98th-Bombar...43/i-MtgRwfg/A Interment of US aircrew in Turkey. http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ails/r/C379817 I believe SGT McCarty was radar operator due to this B-24D had ASV radar. But from which unit, his full name and service number? Regards /JohanSWE |

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East
Ayre was possibly? Harold Woodgar (Harry) Ayre. His serial numbers are given here along with his background (scroll down):
https://books.google.com/books?id=66...%20RAF&f=false Are these the names of the men that were on the A-20/Boston that was missing for several weeks in Iran? You could order the accident report. ;-) https://www.aviationarchaeology.com/...ly/May1942.htm Last edited by RSwank; 25th April 2020 at 02:53. |

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East
Hello Rolland,
Many thanks, he sure looks to be the man. I have the book but did not think to look. Hope that you and family are safe and well. Keep distances and isolated, this thing is going to be around for a long time. Alex |

Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East
Hello,
Re: A-20 Boston 41-19594. Interesting letter in Air Enthusiast Quarterly Five, November 1977-February 1978, p.78 (Talkback - Tiger Ferry, from R. C B. Ashworth): I thought your readers might be interested in the following extract from an RAF ferry pilot's log book*, particularly in view of the article "Tiger in the Sky" in AEQ/Four. It shows that some of the P-40Es were delivered from the Middle East to the AVG by the RAF ferry organisation. This pilot, made two such flights in April/May 1942. The first was in P-40E 5720 (presumably 41-5720) from Ismailia (Canal Zone) on 17 April to Dinjan, which was reached on 3 May. He then flew an operational patrol covering Myikyina on 5 May before continuing to Kumming via Poashan and Yunnan. The return trip was made as a passenger in C-47 17731 from Kumming to Dinjan on 7 May, then by Short "C" Class G-AEUE from Calcutta to El Paraq between 13-16 May. He then picked up P-40E 5668 (41-5668) at Ismalia on 21 May and flew it to Karachi, arriving on 24 May. The flight back to Egypt was very eventful. He left Karachi on 27 May aboard A-20 Boston 119594 (BZ576), staging at Sharjah before force-landing on a beach at Rerqk, The aircraft was written off while trying to taxy up a slope to higher ground, and the crew were missing for 11 days before being located. A Blenheim dropped supplies on the following day and they were picked up by a naval sloop, HMS "Beabelle II", on the 13th day. They left the scene after salvaging aircraft equipment. I am not certain that all the place names are correctly spelt - they are as written in the log book. * Probably referring to James Pickering. R C B Ashworth, Paidstow, Cornwall. Col. Re: Full names of some RAF airmen in Middle East
Regarding the question in post #4 about McCarty. The navigator on the mission was Merrill Kern Gordon, Jr. (The 98th BG reports on Tara Copp's site have his name incorrectly as William Gordon.)
Note: Merrill K Gordon is also listed in 376th BG, so perhaps this was a special crew put together for the mission or maybe he had moved to the 98th. He had flown with the pilot, Omohundro before. This shows him listed in the 376th here: https://www.armyaircorps-376bg.com/m...lyde_crew.html Here is an article from August 1943, after they had both returned to the U.S. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/4955...oner-tribuner/ The mission they were doing in February was a ferret mission, locating German and Italian radar sites along the Italian and Adriatic coasts. Sgt McCarty (RAF) was the specialist operating the locator equipment. On this link: https://archive.org/stream/OnCelesti...Wings_djvu.txt search for the phrase: Then came an unusual There is a long interesting section on the link about Gordon and the phrase above will get you to the middle of his story at the start of the ferret mission and how it ended up in Turkey.
