Looking for info fabrc wing Hurricane Mk.I "JX G" Paul Ritchey 1 Sqn

hi guys,

i have some questions about this fabric winged Hurricane of 1Sqn, flown by Paul Richey during the Battle of France

- what colour would the underside be? all white, oe black white, or black, white and aluminium?

- confirmation of what colour the codes were? (they look grey in the profile)

- upper wing roundels: is that a yellow outline i see in the picture??? either way, they also look much larger than the ones given in the PCM kit

any thoughts / observations much appreciated.

cheers,

Nick

PS pics from Osprey's Hurricane Aces 1939-40

I think the attached might help though sometimes there was a delay in carrying out orders.

Regarding a yellow ring to the wing roundels - these would have been applied pre-war to the fabric winged Hurricanes in the first batch (L1547 to L2146) and what you see in the photo is likely to be the original roundel outer yellow colour showing up at the angle the photo was taken - though I doubt any yellow was actually visible.

As for Codes these should be grey - which the book detailed below says was Air Ministry Grey 33B/157 though I do agree that some Fighters in France and in BoB do look as if they have white codes!

This page came from Camouflage & Markings No2 - The Battle for Britain May to December 1940 by Paul Lucas - Published in July 2000 by Scale Aircraft Monographs.

Larry, thank you.

you most kind!

so, if it was you making a model of this kit, would you go with black / white / alu undersides with no roundels i presume?

Cheers,

Nick

Yes I would.

I would also include under wing roundels as they seem to be painted on many Hurricanes based in France in 1939-40 - as you will see in your Osprey book

Underwing roundels were on 1 and 73 Sq as the two units with the Advanced Air Striking Force - I don't know whether they were on other Hurricanes in France. I'd appreciate confirmation either way, as I do have a 607 Sq Hurricane on the go at the moment.

I seem to remember reading that the rudder markings and under wing roundels on RAF aircraft in France were requested by the French to match the positions of these markings on Armee de la Air aircraft.

I don't know whether they were requested by the French, but the rudder stripes were only on the two squadrons mentioned above.

I believe that they were, but the reason for the distinctive markings is that they were the only two with the Advanced Air Striking Force, near the German border.
