Re: eBay: Allied intrest

In previous photos, I have seen a total of four British aircraft on French flatbed rail cars in similar disrepair. They must have been relatively popular at the time.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest

Interesting the L208x is either L2081 or L2088 - It looks like it may have turned over on landing ..

Both lost May 1940 with 601 Sqn

The pilots of these are confused internet sources maybe someone can confirm serial from photo

the other 'V' has to be P2808

Can anyone work out the correct

Hello,

Donald Robert Miller's RAF Service No. was 37684 - He later transferred to the RCAF (7-5-1945), and was awarded an AFC. His RCAF service number was C94037.

Re: eBay: Allied intrest

Alex

We are looking at 2 different photos of Hurricanes on rail tracks P2808 and L205x

The second L205x is almost certainly L2050 which has been quoted to me independently over the weekend by two different people who I consulted, including Martin Gleeson who posts on this site he sent me the following

L2050

The No.6 Repair & Salvage Unit ORB (AIR 29/802) under 28 May 1940 has the following after noting a salvage party had been
sent to the 501 Sqn. aerodrome to salvage or repair a number of Hurricanes.
"Hurricane L2050 (tail unit destroyed in taxying accident) dismantled and despatched to UK".

This matches the tail damage picture in the photo, but does not match the obvious combat damage. My other source says for L2050 incident "12 May 1940 F/O Eustace 'Gus' Holden #37970 - crash landed after return damage in combat with Dornier Do 17"

I note the wings of L2050 are missing and probably retained at 501 Sqn to repair other aircraft. I had L2056 as a possibility for the aircraft on the rail truck, but the No.6 R&SU ORB with the above for L2050 records;

"Port plane replaced on Hurricane L2056, damaged in combat by machine gun bullets."

Col thanks for correction for Miller service number

on the night of August 7, 1938 Miller was piloting Hawker Demon K8199 of 64 Sqn with AC1 Howard Ambrose Peyton-Bruhl #523036 as gunner when they both bailed out of the aircraft at Royson, near Duxford, Cambridgeshire after he ran out of fuel in fog. This was one of four 64 Sqn Demons that had to be abandoned that night for similar reasons the other being: K8200, K8201 and K8185. The 64 Sqn aircraft were undertaking Co-Operation Exercises with Searchlight Battalions at the time

A fifth machine Demon K8187 Force landed in fog and undershot the runway at Digby "Crew of 2 Neither occupant was injured"

The aircraft were abandoned over Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Leicester

Hawker Demon K8199 was probably the one that crashed at about 4am in a wheatfield at Little Chishill, Cambs. Just prior to it crashing it had been "picked out" by the beam of a searchlight crew
