Jagdabschnittführer 5

Can anyone tell me what aircraft this unit was operating in June 1944? I know they flew the Bf109G but not the actual sub-type. Were any other types used? Also did they suffer any casualties?

best regards

Keith

Re: Jagdabschnittführer 5

It wasn’t a unit as such, it can be translated as “fighter sector director/leader/controller” and as far as I know each one directed the operations of the units based in his area.

Re: Jagdabschnittführer 5

Thanks Nick. It appears there was a attached to the command unit that conducted reconnaissance missions in 1944 operating from an airfield around Evreux. They flew Bf109G. I assume a version of the G-6 or G-8?

Regards

Keith

It seems that there was a Jagdfliegerführer 5, but I have never seen a reference to a Jagdabschnittsführer 5. See the listings for both designations here:

Re: Jagdabschnittführer 5

I have just checked the GAF Lexicon and can confirm that this was Fighter Sector Controller or Leader so did not have any aircraft assets

Re: Jagdabschnittführer 5

My guess is that JaFü 5 filled both roles. Strange that I never encountered mention of a Jagdabschnittsführer 5 in the DEFE 3 or HW 5 intercepts or in any documents. Nor did it have a Feldpostnummer. The Michael Holm website (ww2.dk) gives a Jagdfliegerführer 5 but no Jagdabschnittsführer 5. Stab/Jagdfliegerführer 5 is said have had some assigned aircraft:
"The following aircraft was used by Stab/Jafü 5: Bf 109 and Fi 156."
The above included a single Bf 109 G-6.

Probably a mixture of G-6, G-8 and the occasional G-5. More about tactical reconnaissance units in France here.
