Ηs 126 at Hassani airport
Hi all,
On the following picture showing Fliegerhorst Hassani (Kalamaki) are to see (from right to the left): one Hs 126 (German), one cannibalized Bloch (Greek, probably D 177) and five POTEZ 25 “Avion Grecque”. Can any one recognize the emblem of the Hs 126, in order to find out the squadron it belonged? regards Byron Last edited by byron-; 17th June 2015 at 05:35. |

Re: Ηs 126 at Hassani airport
Hi, Byron...
I believe this Henschel carries the insignia of 2.(H)/Aufkl.Gr.31... a 'sharp-edged' red shield outlined in white, with a black tank and a stylised white wing above the tank. If you have a copy of Ketley's 'Luftwaffe emblems 1939-1945' (Flight Recorder Publications), you will see it logged as #669 on page 138. Regards, Paul |

Hi Paul,
Yes, with a little Phantasy, it could be. It must be, because no other emblem oh the "Aufklärungsstaffeln" in Greece has a similar one. Here it is Last edited by byron-; 21st February 2016 at 10:08. |

Re: Ηs 126 at Hassani airport
2.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 31
----------- 4.1.41: departed France this date for the Reich and then the Balkans. 6.4.41: assigned to 5th Panzer Division/12th Army for the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece. 6.4.41: on the opening day of the attack this date, flew reconnaissance in the Niš-Paracin area of eastern Serbia under Koluft AOK 12. 20.4.41: at Alonakia/11 km W of Kozani in Greece. 11.5.41: at Trikala/north-central Greece. 6.41: the Staffe1 did not take part in the attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941. The 5th Panzer Division, to which 2.(H)/31 was assigned, was held in reserve until October, but instead of accompanying the Division to Russia the Staffel remained in Germany to convert to the Focke Wulf Fw 189. ---------------- Can't place it at Kalamaki (Hassani), but it was certainly in Greece. Ηι Larry,
The pic shows definitely the Hassani airfield, the hangar and the mountains are characteristic. Maybe for reparations there. Have you more information about an airfield in Alonakia? I don`t have it in my lists. Last edited by byron-; 19th May 2015 at 19:07. |

Re: Ηs 126 at Hassani airport
Byron -
Alonakia (40 18 24 N - 21 40 13 E) is not mentioned in any lists I have, either. I am guessing the Staffel was just using a flat field or meadow near the village on 20 April 1941 and then moved on a day or two later. That was the modus operandi of (H) Staffeln. The entire area to the west and south of the village seems to be level and open. There is no evidence that there was an established Landeplatz of Feldflugplatz by that name. Larry |
