RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
On 9 Nov 40, a Do 17 Z-10 of 2./NJG 2 was damaged by a night fighter over the UK and landed back in Holland. The only claim I have that night is apparently by Flt Lt H G Goddard of 219 Sqn but he would have been operating away from where the Do 17 would have been operating (Lincolnshire). Any suggestions?

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
John Foreman in his 1988 book "Battle of Britain the forgotten months November and December 1940" says that a Do 17 of 2./NJG 2 was hit by ground fire near Lincoln, which wounded one of the crew.

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Laurent-That would make more sense. However, he mentions it in the text on 8-9 Nov 40 but then lists it for 9 Nov 40. He also says it was a Z-7, Mikael Olrogg says it was a Z-7 but listed as a Z-10 whilst Simon Parry in his book says it was a Z-10 which had been attacked by a night fighter.....see my problem?

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Interesting. Why would an intruder still be out and about at this time of day (albeit it was winter). Blair and Copeland intercepted a Do 17 near Skegness at 0800 hrs, claiming it to have crashed in the sea; no aircraft crashed. I wonder from where he got the time?

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Hello Chris,
Forman's RAF Fighter Command Victory Claims of WW2 (part 1). Has the following claims for Do17's on the 9th November 1940 (page 296). 17Sqn P/O. G.E.PITMAN shared with P/O. M. CHELMECKI - time 15.30 SW of Aldeburgh(damaged). 151 Sqn F/Lt. K.H.BLAIR - Time 08.00 NW of Skegness.( destroyed). Forman's references can be found on page 8. They are - PRO; FC Combats & Casualties; 2 TAF Combats & Claims ; Sqdn ORB's and Personal Combat Reports. He says that where possible times have been taken from the combat reports. Alex |

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Thanks Alex. I have both of these having helped John with the book and have discounted the afternoon one as this was not the MO for I./NJG 2 so doubt if they would be taking the risk during daylight. I have also looked at the combat reports and they add nothing more

Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Hello,
For a description of the combat (from the German angle), on 9 November 1940 ( I./NJG 2, Daemmerungeinsatz - Ziel 10 101*), see: Ferne Nachtjagd Otto Moehlenbeck & Manfred Leihse Stuttgart:Motorbuch Verlag,1976 pp.23-6 * Can't locate my Luftwaffe UK Target List, but 10 indicated a UK airfield. Re: RAF Claims 9 Nov 40
Thanks Col. As the book is 42 years old, I guess getting a copy of it is nigh impossible but would be interested if anyone can send a scan of relevant pages just to clarify this combat. Simon Parry did not refer to it in his book
