Re: Photo US Navy Aircraft

A very interesting photo Clint

Despite the naval sailors in the photo, I think it is a so called Burgess-Dunne Sportsman's Seaplane Type B-D from around 1916.

It was built for a civil market and never used by the US Navy (or Army)

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo US Navy Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Thanks, had I realised, I need not have started a new thread. Certainly from that angle difficult to differentiate between various Burgess Dunne machines.

Clint

Re: Photo US Navy Aircraft

Indeed Clint

When trying to identify this one, I went for the engine and its position (somewhat raised), the round shape, position of the twin seats and that it completely lacks any ID.

From the few photos I looked at, only the Sportsman fitted the bill so to speak.

Cheers
Stig

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a nice photo with a large number of USN Floatplanes at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-191...kAAOSwYmVgKvLo

The aircraft are predominantly Curtiss N-9 or N-9H (some Burgess built) but there is also at least one Curtiss R-6,serial 340.

Re: Photo US Navy Aircraft

The LUSAC still has it's Signal Corps serial S.C. 42149 but incomplete rudder designators; but 40015 was marked A.S. then S.C. (McCook number P53). P54 was S.C. 42138. The service letters were not always changed. S.C. should have changed to A.S. on 24 May 1918.

P53 was fully marked on rudder later as........

USA
C.II
S.C.
40015
P
53
