Re: Photo of Ju160 on eastern front?

Gents,
here are two additional photos of this plane. Sources are old online auction. One is the "snowy" Ed was talking about. We discussed this plane on the LEMB a while ago.
Besides Lyuban, one caption noted "Borodolino" airfield, April 1942. This confirms an airfield in the surroundings of Lyuban in Leningradskaya Oblast. I could not find the town on a map to be honest, but Borodolino appears in at least one German regimental history about the fightings around Lyuban in the Leningrad district.
Given the location I figured the emblem could be a variant of the Kurierstaffel Finnland emblem, but this is just guesswork. Hope this helps a bit!

Christian

Re: Photo of Ju160 on eastern front?

I'm not entirely sure why a direct link hasn't been included, but the two images posted by Christian above (and loosly credited to the LEMB) were in fact saved and posted on the LEMB by Goran/F19Gladiator back in Sept'09

For those interested, here is a direct link:

Re: Photo of Ju160 on eastern front?

Thanks to Christian and Peter. The first of the newly attached photo is the same scene as the Lw in Focus photo, but from a different angle. The emblem is not visible on this one and the only addition is the appearance of temporary camouflage in the form of foliage. Again there is no clear proof that the aircraft has been scrapped at this point.

The second photo is then presumably later. This photo shows the emblem. It is a better depiction than the LW im focus photo, although still not totally clear. My impression is that the emblem resembles far more closely in shield shape and contents that of III./JG 77 than that of Kurierstaffel Lappland…although it is not identical to it.
