A-26 or A-20 at Corregidor 1945

Watching a video of the assault by 503 RCT in 1945 includes scenes or light/medium bombers attacking the island before the the paratroopers landed. They look like A-20 but could be A-26. Can anyone decide this, and identify the air units?

regards

Keith

Keith,

They were A-20s. See https://www.3rdattackgroup.org/corregidor.php

Also see this page at 1010: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/139906347?objectPage=4 This from the USS Boise reports concerning the landings.

I believe A-26 Invaders only became operational in the Pacific by summer 1945. but have to check. Perhaps this helps:https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/a-26/tech.html

Regards,
Leendert

Re: A-26 or A-20 at Corregidor 1945

The 2 A-26 Groups were the 3rd (Fifth AF) and 319th (Seventh AF); the 3rd flew a few mixed A-20 / A-26 missions from 6 August when they arrived on Okinawa.
The 319th set up on Okinawa (Kadena) the first A-26s landing on 6 July, first mission on the 16th. to the Miyakonojo marshalling yards; their last was on 12 August (22 missions). They had just started painting their tails in the Group colour.
In August the total A-26s (Pacific) was 248 in 1st. line service ( 295 A-20s).
( USAAF Statistical Summary).
