Best books on British WW2 aircraft industry
Are there any good books on the subject from managerial/planning/industrial point of view?

Re: Best books on British WW2 aircraft industry
I have one book with some interesting recollections of working in the industry, which also covers the people who services and flew the aircraft operationally. "War In The Air" by Edward Smithies (Penguin Books, 1992) ISBN 0-14-013045-4.
There’s also this (which I haven’t read): https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...dgerton-review |

Re: Best books on British WW2 aircraft industry
Jukka, Suggest have a look at Ely Devons: 'Planning in Practice: Essays in Aircraft Planning in War-Time' and see if that is more what you are seeking.
This is the overview from Barnes & Noble: "Ely Devons (1913-67) was a British economist and statistician who made notable contributions to a variety of areas. Originally published in 1950, this book contains a study of the way in which the Ministry of Aircraft Production planned production during the Second World War. Based upon Devons' firsthand experience within the planning division of the Ministry, the text forms a highly personal record of the ways in which production was planned, incorporating criticisms and judgements where necessary. A linear historical perspective is avoided, in favour of a systematic approach focusing on various aspects of the production process in turn. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in British aircraft production and military history." You can occasionally find copies of the original edition on abebooks. After that you have to dig into the individual aircraft and aeroengine company histories, or the archives. |
