In Memoriam: Kathleen "Kay" Hilbrandt, 44-W-10.
“I was the first woman to work in the hangar as a mechanic and it was because there was a shortage of men to work on the airplanes and get them ready for flight. And so, this friend of mine, who was the test pilot, said 'Why don’t you hire some women to do the mechanical work?' – which they did. We all worked on the one airplane and got it ready for the test flight. I loved that job. We had to run up the engines, take down readings, compensate the compass, sit in the Bombay to look for leaks. I worked there for about a year. And then, when I was called for the WASP, I had to decide to stay there or go with the WASP. I wanted to fly, so I decided to take the WASP.”
Kay was finally laid to rest in August. The local paper had this lovely write-up:

The editor for TAPinto Rahway poses the question in his article, "what is a WASP" and our documentary COMING HOME: FIGHT FOR A LEGACY, which includes an interview with Kay, aims to make the WASP a standard history lesson in our schools nationwide. So that all children will grow up knowing about the WASP!9m7BtZH9-8

Re: Kathleen "Kay" Hilbrandt, WASP

'The first woman to work in the hangar as a mechanic...' at a time when women were still second-class citizens...
May she rest in peace.
