Wekusta 76 He 111 crash info

Hello all, I am interested in any additional info related to the loss of He 111 H-16 V1+FZ of Wekusta 76 on 20.7.1944 in the Carpathians in Romania.

I was lucky enough to find 2-page crash report at Bundesarchiv, but it is missing the full name of the crew ( only has last names and rank ) and is quite vague on the location. It would be most helpful if anyone knew what the usual intinerary of its mission was, in the report it is stated that it took off at 5 Am from Debrecen for weather info gathering and then returned at the same place usually.

Furthermore, does anyone have a contact for any of the authors of this book ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Wekusta 76 He 111 crash info

Hello Mihai,

Extracted from the Kingston-Selinger book about the Wekustas :

"Difficult weather conditions over the Carpathian Mountains often impaired flying in the region and, on 20 July (1944), caused the loss of an He 111H-6 that crashed on the slopes of Virful Omul (2,505 m/8,219 ft) south of Brasov (Kronstadt) in an attempt to cross the Transylvanian Alps through the Predeal Pass. The crew, including the Met observer, Wd.Ass. Rudolf Sanger, did not survive..."

Hope this helps

Pierre

Re: Wekusta 76 He 111 crash info

I have no other information, but do wonder if this aircraft, rather than being coded 'V1+FZ' ( I have the 'V1' code I have as being assigned to Transportst VIII.FlKp.), was instead wearing the SKZ 'VI+FZ'?

I think the code of that aircraft was VJ+FZ, which was a He 111H-16 WNr. 161418. For that one I have no other crash data.

Re: Wekusta 76 He 111 crash info

Hi Merlin

In FB Frahm I found He111/162402 with SKZ: VJ + FJ.
Thus I think, the WNr. must be 162418 !

best wishes
JoMe

Mihai,

Plane is also given as an Ju 88, but most probably because "Bestand" gives as usual plane used by Westa 76, the Ju 88,
