Re: W/CDr David Tough

So it would appear the war memorial at Forvie is wrong?

I have looked at the BNA subscription, His parents were from Udny Station (close to where I stay) so that explains why the name is of Foveran memorial.

I must never have hit reply last night, I had typed that Udny connection.

His probate records list home as Thistley Hill, Udny Station

I think he was with 156 MU at the time of death in 1944, does anybody know where 156MU were stationed out (near Bristol?)

Re: W/CDr David Tough

Hello,

Definitely not No.156 MU.

No.156 MAINTENANCE UNIT.

No.2 (Northwest Africa) Aircraft Repair Unit formed 12.3.43 at Blida; 10.5.43 redesignated No.6 (North Africa) ARU; 22.5.43 became No.156 MU as (Twin-engined Aircraft Repair) (dett at Sidi Ahmed to 9.44) ('A' Dett to Setif 10.4.45); 1.1.44 to No.218 Group; Disbanded 31.12.45 and replaced by No.2 FLTU; Station handed over to French 10.1.46.

See:FT&SU since 1912/Sturtivant & Hamlin/A-B/(2007)/p.181.

Col.

Re: W/CDr David Tough

His CWGC burial leger states the 156 MU connection, so that is a 'fact' of sorts. Now it might be a typo or he might have been posted to there prior to a return to the UK.

His death certificate would be worth while obtaining, i think it can be ordered via PDF for the 1944 period now, uinless that trial period is over, and you might want to get his service record. And did that newspaper obituary contain anything of use?

Re: W/CDr David Tough

The CWGC records that his unit was 156 Maintenance Unit. This was based in Algeria.

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/c...h,-james-kemp/

The Scottish National War Memorial records that his theatre of death was RAF NAAF (ie Northwest African Air Forces).

https://www.snwm.org/roll-search/?id...25853a8&page=1

However, he couldn't have died overseas because the policy was not to repatriate the dead so a possible scenario is that he was evacuated to the UK in a serious condition from injury or disease and died in a Bristol hospital. The CWGC record mentions that there were military hospitals in Bristol in both wars and it seems likely that those buried in that particular plot died in hospital. The death certificate will give the cause of death.
