UN Fighter Wing Katanga 1960-163

Hello,
the Imperial Iranian Airforce supported this UN-Unit with F-86 as I know.
How many planes served from the IIAF? And how many sorties they flew and lost the any plane in action?

Thanks,
h.

Re: UN Fighter Wing Katanga 1960-163

Hans,

Didn't read the article in detail, but you may find answers here: http://www.iiaf.net/north-american-f-86-f-sabre/ under Congo Mission.

IIAF sent 4 Sabres.

Re: UN Fighter Wing Katanga 1960-163

As a sidenote: things have changed considerably since then: the Iranian jet fighters made two stops in Saudi Arabia on their ferry flight...
Not very likely to happen now.

Re: UN Fighter Wing Katanga 1960-163

You can download a pdf copy of Walter Dorn's article on the UN's First "Air Force" - Peacekeepers in the Congo from this website:
https://www.researchgate.net/publica..._Congo_1960-64

It seems to indicate that the Iranian F-86 were supplementary reinforcements, and did not arrive in time to see combat.

Not the best source but it does provide some information.
