Dornier over Berkshire/Surrey
Hello, Forumites
I have been researching the logbook of Maurice Summers, a staff/test pilot at Vickers/Brooklands during WW2. On 18 June 1940, he was flying a Percival Q6, G-AFIW from Brooklands to Reading (WoodleyA/D) when he claims to have been attacked by “a Dornier”. That comment was written in scratchy handwriting, obviously much later in his life ( he died in 2000). My question is: Would such an aircraft be flying over S England, on its own, in June 1940, whilst Germany was in the throws of over-running France, and the fact that this was pre Battle of Britain? Grateful for any comments Tia Andy Bigweeker |

Re: Dornier over Berkshire/Surrey
Do.17P on a recce mission? Not sure why they'd bother (presumably) descending to lower level to catch a Q6, it would seem to jeopardise their prime mission.

Re: Dornier over Berkshire/Surrey
No known record of any recce missions over UK that day as they were still fighting in France. However, that night there was a major nocturnal attack by KG 4

Re: Dornier over Berkshire/Surrey
Thank you, Chris and Graham.
I am in contact with Maurice’s grandson. We both question the accuracy of that comment re the Dornier. It was written in M’s logbook, 50 or so years after the event, when he was somewhat frail and so he may have probably got the date wrong... Unfortunately, I can’t cross check at the moment with other information we have at Brooklands. Atb Andy |
