Re: 7th and 14th July 1944, 15th USAAF fighters claims vs. Me 410

III./ZG 26 did have some intersting a/c on hand. August of 44 some Bf 110G-4's, a loss of a Ju 88C-6 on September 2, 1944. last 3 losses I note for III. gruppe were on October 24, 1944 and they were Bf 110G-2's from 12th staffel with codes:

4A+IU
4A+HU
4A+CU, the 4 in the case of 12th staffel may have been an H ? I think my eyes are going bad..........Luftkampf with all crews KIA.

12th Staffel is a part of IV./ZG 26 not III./ZG 26,
Look at http://www.ww2.dk/air/zerstorer/zg26.htm. There is tabele with Me 410 belong to III./ZG 26, but no trace of Me 410 in Flugzeugbestand und Bewegungsmeldungen at http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/zerst/biiizg26.html

yes correct there was no division between III. and IV./ZG 26 in my listings.

last of III./ZG 26 was two losses to 7th staffel, on the 10th and the other on the 26 of May 1944. 2 Bf 110G-2 lost in combat and crashed. last 110 was coded 3U+LS both crew killed

You must have some critical approach toward sources. Could you consider an author writing just about everything a reliable source?

Re: 7th and 14th July 1944, 15th USAAF fighters claims vs. Me 410

Gentlemen, although the topic was last discussed many, many years ago, here is my tidbit:
I'm doing than and now a very low level research on last missions of Me 410 from July 1944 till end of the war.

19440708:
An diesem Tag wurden 7 Messerschmitt Me 410 im niederösterreichischen Luftraum von alliierten Jägern abgeschossen.

On this day 7 Me 410 were shot down over Lower Austria.
I guess they started from Tulln Airfield.

1./I./ZG 76:
Me 410 ... Olt Hirschfelder, Dietrich ... & ... Uffz Rieder, Günter ..... Tulln
Me 410 ... Lt Pestel, Karl ... & ... Uffz Wenz, Ernst ..... Mollersdorf
Me 410 ... Uffz Ahrens, Werner ... & ... Uffz Frühwald, Leopod ..... Grafenwörth (6 km südlich)

2./I./ZG 76:
Me 410 ... ???????? ... & ... Uffz Brömme, Gerhard ..... Jetzelsdorf
Me 410 ... Ofw Westerhof, Josef ... & ... Uffz Blasche, Gerhard ..... Höbersbrunn(-bach?)/Krems
Me 410 ... Ofw Rothbart, Hans ... & ... Uffz Kroth, Albert ..... Maria Ponsee

3./I./ZG 76:
Me 410 ... Lt Heinz, Arnold ... & ... Gfr Schneider, Raimund ..... Fels/Kollersdorf (7 km südlich)

Source:
A booklet about German Luftwaffe crashes in Austria.

Just a side-step:

19440702:
Die I./ZG 76 konnte 8 Boeing B-17 ohne eigene Verluste abschießen.

Just only a week earlier the same hy fighter group (I./ZG 76) shot down 8 B-17 Bombers without a single loss.

Also a booklet, but this time one about Me 410.

Gentlemen,

This is a pretty interesting topic indeed! The Me 410 should have been an improvement over the Bf-110 but it wasn't.

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Depends on the role it was playing … long-range night intruder, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft?

As I understand it, the bigger problem was not the tasks which the Me 410 performed, but rather the fact that it inherited many of the inferior handling qualities of the Me 210. The Me 410 also had an aerodynamically unsound engine installation, which is why the proposed Me 410 C would have adopted the DB 603 with an annular radiator, which was used on the far more successful He 219.

Warm regards,

Paul

Happy to continue that discussion but (entirely my fault) we'd be going off topic and into Axis territory.
