Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s

Hi Dan,

You are right. There is no photographic evidence of the werknummer. However, since it matches the description in the document mentioned in #72 and place of operation of this unit at the end April 1945, to me it quacks like a duck. I have changed the captions using the word "probably".

best regards,

Jim

Dan,

Check the folder I sent you for complete information on this machine. It’s Werknummer and E-Kenn. are confirmed via documents and photographs.

Best,

David

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s

110662 Call sign GT+LH. Me 262 A-1a. This A-1a was test flown by Hptm. Toni Lotter at Neuburg on 4 January 1945 at 12:29-12:43. While stationed with I./KG(J) 54, it made six takeoffs totaling two hours and ten minutes at Giebelstadt in January 1945, where it was still in service on 5 February 1945. An Ultra intercept on 1 March of a I./KG 51 document stated that it would be serviceable on 2 March.

This is what I have on it, no mention of Moosburg. I am extremely careful about Me 262 WN'r. You have both given me information that will take me some time to analyze. Thank you!

73. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 111690 White 5 of 1./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz), Czechoslovakia to British-held Fassberg, Germany on 8 May 1945 by Oblt. Fritz Stehle, staffelkapitän of 2./JG 7. Note the small RAF roundel with the outer yellow ring and the lack of RAF fin flashes common to Fassberg Me 262s. It was given Air Ministry No. 80 and ferried by S/Ldr. Tony F. Martindale on 5 August 1945 from Fassberg via Twente to Melsbroek, the next day to Manston and on the 7th to RAE Farnborough.

74. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 110800 White 7 of 9./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Uffz. Günther Engler of 2./JG 7. It was given British markings and flown from Fassberg to Lübeck-Blankensee by W/C. Warren E. Schrader on 27 May 1945.

75. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 500210 Yellow 17 (note the Red 7 on the nosegear door) of 3./JFG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Ltn. Hans Dorn of 1.(?)/JG 7. Like White 5 above, it does not carry the JG 7 wappen but has its blue/red RVT bands on the rear fuselage. It was flown from Fassberg to Lübeck by F/Lt. Clive Gosling on 27 May 1945. Likely transferred from Lübeck to Schleswig in early June, it was ferried from Schleswig via Twente to Melsbroek on 9 June 1945 then to RAE Farnsborough via Manston the same day.

76. Me 262 A-1a/Jabo or A-2a W.Nr. 500200 Black X of 2./KG 51 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Fj. Ofw. Hans Fröhlich of E.Schwarm Me 262 des G.d.S. It was flown from Fassberg via Twente to Melsbroek by S/Ldr. Tony F. Martindale on 28 August 1945. That same day, Lt. Cdr. Eric Brown, RN, flew it from Melsbroek to Manston. On 6 September it reached RAE Farnborough.

77. Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 111007? Yellow or Green 5 of III./JG 7 was flown from Zatec (Saaz) to Fassberg on 8 May 1945 by Uffz. Anton Schöppler of 11./JG 7. Note that the third digit of the werknummer has been shaded in on both sides of the tailfin. So far I have seen no evidence that it was flown out of Fassberg.

Thanks again for posting these, I'm really enjoying this thread.
Regarding #(77), I note you have captioned the actual photo as 110007.

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s

Thanks, Andy. My bad! I've corrected the caption on the photo since 110007 is not a valid werknummer and I believe Dan O'Connell got it right. See pages 121-122 in Me 262 Production Log.

W.Nr.110007 is clearly and readable. The rest is just speculation

Re: Some enlarged and 'tweaked' known photos of Me 262s

For what it is worth, Philippe Saintes (in his Lela Presse Les pertes des Me 262)
also lists this one as WNr 110007

Cheers
Stig
