Unknown markings on a He 70

Hello,

I am looking into a loss and once again I met the wall!!

The matter concerns an He 70, where the pilot Stemmer belonged to Luftdienstkommando 1/7, crashed with it and were killed together with the BM on July 17. 1942

The plane had Wnr. 1132.

The markings are like this: U.D.I.N.

I simply don't understand this. Is it a simpler way of writing UD + IN?

Does anyone know more about this?
Thanks in advance,

Christian

Re: Unknown markings on a He 70

Hi again,

Sorry, I think I have it!

I just went through the civil register and saw D - UDIM and not UDIN.

It says it was a He 70 G and belonged to LDK 1/7.

Sorry the inconvenience.

Re: Unknown markings on a He 70

Christian

Yes indeed the WNr 1132 has in the past always been listed as D-UDIM.
There is also a STKZ known as UD+IM (this is not however automatically connected to D-UDIM)

In my list D-UDIN is not known, but I do have two photos of said aircraft, but none of D-UDIM.

Of course there are plenty of He 70 which lacks either a civil registration AND STKZ so I am not saying that D-UDIM/D-UDIN are the same aircraft, but it is an interesting thought that
a) The aircraft was wrongly marked, ie it was painted D-UDIN instead of D-UDIM, or
b) Past historians has got it wrong, and instead of D-UDIM we should write D-UDIN?

May I ask how visible the four letters are on the fuselage and why you connect WNr 1132 with D-UDIN?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Unknown markings on a He 70

Hello again Stig, sorry the delay,

For a number of years I have had a picture (deathcard) of Fw. Anton Stemmer and never really knew much about him or his plane and the circumstances surrounding his death.

Not long ago I got hold of some files containing losses, not inflicted by enemy action, DVL/Unfälle and there I found him/his plane.

I have attached a scan of that particular loss, which caused my confusion. To me it looked like the letter "N". It was also the first time I found all those dots. Then I tried to search on an internet page called "Golden years of aviation" under German civil A/C register and there it was with D-UDIM. He 70 G with the same Wnr. and in service with LDK 1/7.

Above it was D-UDIN, which was a W 34 hi.

I still need to find the rank of the BM Matauschek, who also died in the accident.
I just love when something comes to light and in here I have had a lot of help over the years.
Again thank you for your response Stig.
Regards,
Christian
