For 63 days, as insurgents fought heroically and tirelessly on the city streets, 1586 (SD) Flight’s Halifax and Liberator crews flew long missions from southern Italy to supply them with arms, explosives, sabotage, and communications equipment. Supporting them were crews from the RAF’s 148 (SD) and 178 Squadrons, and 31 and 34 (South African Air Force) Squadrons. Losses of aircraft and aircrew were high.
