Hello,

The fate of the crew of the Ju 88 which went missing on 17th April 1941, Obergefreiter Wilhelm Beetz, Gefreiter Rudolf Kronika and Gefreiter Johann Mittag, was officially unknown. However, aviation enthusiast Andy Saunders and members of what was then the Wealden Aviation Group believed that there was evidence to suggest that an aircraft crash site at Gothic House Farm, Thorney, near Peterborough, was that of their Ju 88. In 1976 the site was excavated and from a depth of up to thirty feet, the remains of the Ju 88 and of its three crew men were unearthed. After being officially identified. their remains were buried with full military honours at the German Military War Cemetery, Cannock Chase, Staffordshire.

I./NJG 2 Losses 1940-1941.

17/4/41 21.23 hrs Ju 88C-4 W.Nr.0345 R4+CM of 4./NJG2.

Crashed at Gothic House Farm, Thorney, Cambridgeshire, in uncertain circumstances but believed to have been brought down by another I./NJG2 aircraft.

Ogefr Wilhelm Beetz (F) +
Gefr Rodolf Kronica (Bm) +
Gefr Johann Mittag (Bf) +
