Photo LFG Roland C.II

Hello,

Currently on ebay at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flugpla...AAAOSwx0teN-0N

is a nice photo of a LFG Roland C.II.

Can anyone say whether the star markings on the wheels and spinner are unit markings or personal markings of the pilot?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo LFG Roland C.II

Can't help making some reflections here.

Odd, no 'bestellnummer' is visible on this aircraft.
Secondly this is the second time this pet name is used on a Roland C.II even if the other e-bay photo name was spelled Meerkatzi.

Why are these two aircraft pet named after a monkey species in Africa? Were both pilots from German East Africa perhaps, or was/is this a common pet name for German girls?

In Sweden we simply nicked the German name and called that general species 'Markatta' but it is also a name we gave to troublesome (read independent) girls who had no intention of obeying silly male rules.... Same in Germany perhaps?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo LFG Roland C.II

Yes,

It seems to me that with LFG Bestellnummer on both the C.II and D types was usually either not applied or painted over as the case may be, though I think Bestellnummer are slighly more common on later LFG C.II.

It is unusual that both LFG C.II have a variant of Meerkatz, I don't know why that is.

Not sure if you watch any uk tv, but our most famous Meerkat is Russian, Alexander Orlov and advertises a comparison sight.

Clint

Re: Photo LFG Roland C.II

Aha

However a Meerkat is not the same thing as the German Meerkatze (Vervet in English).

The Meerkatze is a monkey while the meerkat is a smallish mammal living in groups underground. Very nice animals. Seen them in Kalahari.

Cheers
Stig
