Reiner Pöttgen (Marseille's Kaczmarek)

Hi,

I'm seeking information on Hans-Joachim Marseille's Kaczmarek, Reiner Pöttgen.

1. Which its your rank?
2. When was he born?
3. Is he still alive?
4. What badges did him win?
5. In what other squadrons besides JG 27 he served?

Cheers,

Franklin

I don't have much but there is a claim found in Tony Wood's lists as follows:

04.02.44 Ofw. Pöttgen 1./JagdlerherGr. B-17 04 Ost S/DM-9:7.500m
[S.E. Toulon] 13.47

Best wishes,

Hi Franklin,

Rainer Pöttgen served with 3/JG27 from at least 01Jun42 to at least 01Oct43. As Tom has said he may also have made a claim on 04Feb44 whilst serving with 1/Jagdlehrerüberprüfungsgruppe.

I believe he survived the war. I can find 8 claims made by him.

Regards

Andy Fletcher

Pottgen

He is listed with six Abschusse, but no awards beyond IC. Not sure of his fate. He may be listed in Volume 1 of Prien's work on JG 27.

Pöttgen

Hi!

Thank's for the information.

What unit is this? 1./JagdlerherGr?

I discovered that he was Oberfeldwebel and he is listed with seven Abschusse. But I didn't discover anything on awards, nor date of birth or post war fate.

Incredible that is had so little of a rottenflieger of somebody so famous!

Jagdlehrerüberprüfungsgruppe

From "The Luftwaffe 1933-45" web site. This unit evolved from Jagdfliegerschule 5 and on 1.06.44 was redesignated as II./JG 110.
I don't know the exact nature of this training unit but based on its name I would guess that it had to do with preparing combat pilots to take on the role of fighter pilot instructors. I could be totally wrong about that of course.

Poettgen

Oberfeldwebel, listed with 7 victories in the Ring/Girbig JG 27 history - 5 vics with JG 27..survived the war, was still alive when Ring produced his book
some details of his victories as I just happened to be preparing a piece on I./JG 27 for my site..
..
I./JG 27 departed Africa for Sicily in November 1942, staged via Germany to Evreux in north-western France, subordinated to JG2 & JG26

14 April 1943 - I. Gruppe shifted to Poix - 4th victory - Walrus W2772 (277 Squadron) off the Dieppe coast (claimed as a 'Stranraer')
15 May 1943 - 5th victory - a Spitfire escorting Bostons raiding Poix
15 July 1943 - 6th victory - a Spitfire Mk IX of 322 Squadron again escorting Bostons raiding Poix...
end July 43 3./JG 27 moved to the south of France (Marignane- MRS) and then back to Germany (Münster-Hansdorf)
there's a nice article on I./JG 27 in France in Avions No 116 - back issues at
http://www.avionsbateaux.com
