Commanders in NJG 2

As promised, here is our interpretation of the NJG 2 commanders data as extracted from our officer career files. One will note that there are gaps and some inconsistencies. We leave these "as is" to facilitate discussion with a hope to resolve some of these. Enjoy!

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

Doug,

Missing as Staffelkapitän of 7./NJG 2 is Hptm Billig.
He was at least Staffelkapitän of 7./NJG 2 during it's period at Volkel airbase in the Netherlands from May 18th till August 15th, 1944.
With regards,

Jaap Woortman

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

A glance at our files shows that this chap was not associated with NJG 2 but NJG 3. It could well be that we are missing that part of his career:

BILLIG, Werner.
01.08.39 Oblt., in III./KG 3.
01.04.42 promo to Hptm.
02.03.43 in IV./KG 3 (to 07.05.43).
07.05.43 trf to NJG 101.
09.12.44 Hptm., appt Staka Schulstaffel/NJG 3 (to 30.12.44).
31.12.44 Hptm., appt Staka Stabsstaffel/NJG 3 (to 1945).

Where did you get this NJG 2 information? It would appear to be in conflict with ours which is derived mainly from original documents.

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

Doug,

This information was given by Nonnenmacher, pilot of 8./NJG 2, in a letter of August 10th, 1978 to mr. Henk Talen with information of 7th and 8th Staffel of NJG 2 during it's time at Volkel in 1944.

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

Doug

It appears that Jaap's information can be supported by the Claims data (Tony Woods Website).

24.02.44 Hptm. Billig 7./NJG 2 4-mot. Flzg. £ 80-100˚ 60-80 km. von FF Puls: 6.000 m. 21.46 Film C. 2025/I Anerk: Nr. 7

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

Between the above information, the Tony Woods data and the info in Stipdonk and Meyer's Zerstörer und Nachtjagdverbände, Teil 2, we must provisionally conclude that the Billig writeup should now read:

BILLIG, Werner.
01.08.39 Oblt., in III./KG 3.
01.04.42 promo to Hptm.
02.03.43 in IV./KG 3 (to 07.05.43).
07.05.43 trf to NJG 101.
01.09.43 Hptm., appt Staka 7./NJG 2 (to 30.10.44).
09.12.44 Hptm., appt Staka Schulstaffel/NJG 3 (to 30.12.44).
31.12.44 Hptm., appt Staka Stabsstaffel/NJG 3 (to 1945).

And that the Staka of 7./NJG 2 should now read:

Staka 7./NJG 2:
Hptm. Werner Billig (01.09.43 - 30.10.44).
Oblt. Walter Briegleb (10.44 - ?).

There may be more pending changes to the "Commanders of NJG 2" listing but that will have to wait until we have finished digesting some new material.

Re: Commanders in NJG 2

Larry and Doug,

I can add the following.
According to Bundesarchiv RL 10/575 Geschichte NJG 2 + NJG 3 from Döring:
1.11.1944 III./NJG 2 ist umbenannt worden in die IV./NJG 3.
Staffelkapitän 10./NJG 3 ist Hptm Billig.
