STUKA losses - N Afrika - 26th October 1942

Good night to all members.

Am trying to find out which were the actual recorded losses of Ju 87 B STUKA (probably from III Gruppe St.G 3) on the 26th October 1942, on the N. Afrika Theatre of war.

Hauptmann Kurt Walter was KIA that day flying the Ju 87 D-1 Trop, werknummer 2562, code S7+??. Who was his BF? Is it known the last code of his machine?

There are OTHER Ju 87 recorded lost or damaged from St.G.3 and in the N. Afrika theater?

Hurricanes claimed 2 shot down, 2 probably destroyed and 3 damaged..."probably" (I do not have sources to affirm or deny that) overclaiming.

Adriano

The book MAW Vol 2 states with regard to WNr 2562
'Stab III./StG 3 shot down by Hurricane 8km east El Daba, two baled out.'
However in the main text they give the extra details that Hptm Kurt Walter, the Gruppenkommandeur, was killed when his parachute did not open.

Stab, I. and III./StG 3 suffered 6 further aircraft lost or damaged to various degrees

You could try ULTRA for Fliegerführer Afrika's daily reports. They seem to be there for most days and describe the ops flown, with successes and losses.

You'd probably want either DEFE 3/780 or /781, both viewable and downloadable free from the UK National Archives.

NICK, you opened a totally new road to me...I had read previously about ULTRA and had seen and read your site, but the amount of details and INTEL held at those DEFE files is simply amazing. Thank you very very much for sharing that link. I guess I do have a long time digering that.

STIG, thank you for pointing the reference book, which I know but have not. A friend of mine do have one of the vollumes, but am not sure if Vol. 2.

Is it possible to take a picture or transcribe the Ju 87 losses of StG 3 recorded that particular day?

I was unaware that the Gruppenkommandeur had bailed out and that his chute did not open. Thanks for that piece of information.

Hello Adriano,

apart from the WNr. 2562 on 26 Oct 1942 the III./StG 3 suffered two damages of Ju 87 D-1 trop:
WNr. 2590 crash-landing 80% (GQM loss return 5 Dec 1942 item 59) and WNr. 2105 crash-landing 20%, Bf Gefr Voigt injured (GQM loss return 5 Dec 1942 item 60).

Leo
