474th Fighter Group names

I am trying to find the Christian names of six pilots from the 430th Fighter Squadron. I have been through all the group and squadron records (including trips to Maxwell Field and NARA II) and various databases but come up empty. All were very late war assignees, flying the number of missions in ( ) behind their names. Thank you for any help!

Cole (1)
Holmes (1)
F/O Hughes (1)
Johansen (2)
Norris (1)
F/O Neumann (1)

Re: 474th Fighter Group names

Kent,

Neumann most likely Robert W. Neumann from Washington State. (1921-2010). In Air Force Magazine (1951), Vol. 34, he asks if there's ever a reunion of 430th FS planned.
His gravemarker (findagrave) says he was a Flt O.

Regards,
Leendert

Re: 474th Fighter Group names

Here a some of the names you are looking for.
Lt. Arnold G. "Pete" Cole
Lt. Harold S. Norris
Lt. Robert W. Neumann

Nobody by the name of either Hughes or Johansen was ever assigned to the 430th FS or anywhere else in the 474th FG.

Re: 474th Fighter Group names

According to the 430th FS records at the end of the war, they showed a F/O Hughes flew 1 mission for 2:25 hours and a Lt. Johansen flew 2 missions for 4:45 hours. I will check further on the other names you mentioned. Thank you very much for the help.

Re: 474th Fighter Group names

Hi Kent,

I forgot to include Lt. William H. "Bill" Holmes. Can you include a screenshot of the information for Hughes and Johansen? I can't find anything on them in my 430th FS archives. They must have joined the unit very late not to be included in the squadron history. Then again, of all the 474th FG squadrons, the 430th FS has the sketchiest history lacking much detail. I will continue to research Hughes and Johansen to see what I can find out.
Cheers, Gary

Re: 474th Fighter Group names

Gary,

On microfilm roll BO625 (or CD now days), frame 1361 shows both Hughes and Johansen. They are on the last page of the May 1945 chart of pilots showing missions, hours, awards, claims and status. Now, I realize not many people are as tech-illiterate as I am, but if someone can tell me a simple way to post the screen shot from a paper copy I'd print out, or the pdf file I have it stored on, I'll give it a try. I can try sending a scan to your PM, but as of yet haven't mastered our set-up for even doing that. Or, if you would send me your snail mail address in a PM, I can mail a copy of the page. I'll help however I can, I just apologize for not being in the 21st century.
