Spitfire Victory May 29, 1940

I'm trying to determine the RAF unit to which a Spitfire belonged which my uncle, Hauptmann Dr. Albrecht Ochs, claimed on May 29, 1940. The combat occurred at 1830 hours 25 kilometers northeast of Calais, and according to the description in a feldpost letter, involved several Spitfires, as well as the ME-109's of 4. Staffel JG 3. Any help of course greatly appreciated.

Unhappy Re: Spitfire Victory May 29, 1940

Hello,

on Victor Bingham's book "Blitzed", i found the following spitfire for may 29 :

Squadron 64 : (?) F/Sgt Flynn, L1052 S/lder Rogers, K9832 F/O George, K9906 P/O Hackney

All MIA except Flynn who could be rescued

Squadron 222 : P9376 P/O Broadhurst (forced landed)

Squadron 610 : F/O Kerr, F/O Wilson (?), S/Lder Franks, Sgt Jenkins
All MIA, serial unknows.

Hope this could help.

Hi Vince.

64 Squadron were certainly in the area at that time ( I assume your time stated is European time not British).
64 claimed a 109 destroyed and one damaged (RAF Victory claims of WW2 1939/40) so they were definatley involved with 109's in combat. I can not confirm if any 64 aircraft were lost as yet but looking at Stephane's response it looks like they did loose aircraft in the clash.
Have you seen the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 11 BF109D/E Aces 1939/41. JG3 are mentioned often and the opening cover picture is a double page of JG3 109's during the battle at dispersal.

Thanks guys, it sounds like 64 Squadron are the likely opponents. Jon, I'll definitely pick up a copy of that book.

Hi Vince,
I was very interested to see your post as above. Has an enthusiast of this particular period the B.O.B, im particularly keen to learn more about your uncle Hptm Albrecht Ochs, do you have a photograph him? and do you know what became of his Flugbuchs also.
I have read about his career whilst with JG3, some time ago and would be really interested to learn more.
If you can provide any further information, i would be most grateful.
Rgs,
Steve.
