771896 Sgt Mervyn John Fitzhardinge BALDWIN

Hi guys

Sgt Mervyn Baldwin was killed in action flying Buffaloes with 243 Squadron at Singapore on 22 January 1942, age 33.

Prior to joining 243 Squadron he was flying Blenheim IFs with 27 Squadron.

Can anyone provide more information on his service and background? A photograph would be a bonus.

Cheers
Brian

Have you tried the history of 27 Sqn (The Flying Elephants) or failing that is there a 27 Sqn Association?

Hello,

No mention of Baldwin in Chaz Bowyer's, The Flying Elephants.

Col.

Re: 771896 Sgt Mervyn John Fitzhardinge BALDWIN

Hi guys

Known as 'Ginger' it seems that he went to India in 1928 (age 20), perhaps Colonial Office (just a guess).

Might he have learned to fly privately in India? He volunteered for RAF in 1939 age 31, trained somewhere (India?) and joined 27 Squadron (a formerly India based unit) in Malaya in December 1941.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian
