Re: luftwaffe a/c loss 27 & 30 mar 44 south of plymouth

27/28th March raid on Bristol with at least 15 luftwaffe aircraft shot down/crashed. Of these 11 crashed on the UK or France (including a JU88 of 7/KG30 which crashed near Cherbourg after being damaged by a N/F, a Ju88 of 9/KG6 with one crewman killed bailing out over the UK following aircraft engaged by AA, and a Ju188 of 2/KG66 crew baled out over France following AA damage over the UK )) plus a Do 217 of 7/KG2, Ju88 of 6/KG6, Ju88 of 7/KG6 and a Ju88S of 5/KG66 reported missing. As well as P/O Greens claim S/L Howard & F/O Ross of 456 Sqd. claimed a Ju88 50 miles south of Brighton, S/L Thwaites & F/O Clemo claimed a Ju188 over the Channel. The loss of the Ju88S may be linked to the claim by Green or Thwaites for a Ju188 but that is only speculation.
30 Mar 1944 claim by Kwam I beleive shoud be 29/30 April 1944 raid on Plymouth two D0217K's of III/KG100 to S/L Williams and F/O Kirkpatrick of 406 Sqd. plus a Fw190 of 3/SKG10, a Ju88 of 5/KG6 and a Ju88 of 9/KG54 missing. Claims by 1st.Lt Kwam and P/O Reed of 406 Sqd for a Ju88 40 miles south of Start point, and by F/L Capka and F/O Cupola of 68 Sqd. for a Ju88 south of Exmouth,

Re: luftwaffe a/c loss 27 & 30 mar 44 south of plymouth

For some additional info on the Plymouth raid, the two aircraft lost were

Do 217 K-2 6N+AD (wk.nr. 4701)
Do 217 K-3 6N+IT (wk. nr. 4716)

This last aircraft, the one shot down outside Blackawton, was a significant intelligence find for the British. First, it was a relatively new K-3 variant of the Do 217, the first that fell into British hands. More important, a FuG 203 Kehl transmitter unit was recovered and, with some replacement vacuum tubes, restored to working condition. This unkt provided valuable intelligence for the scientists developing countermeasures, allowing them to test and refine jammers using actual German hardware "in the loop." I have a photo of the recovered transmitter and it looks to nearly intact.
