Re: Do 17
Nice!
It’s turning out to be a worthy little series. |

Re: Do 17
Hi Chris,
Are you also writing a book on the Do17 for Classic? Thanks. |

Re: Do 17
Osprey first then Classic/Crecy. Osprey one is almost finished 30000 words 30 profiles 70 photos. Crecy will be 60000 words & 600 photos

Re: Do 17
Off topic. It's interesting to see the word count of specialised aviation books. I never saw this before (true, I didn't look expressly for it).
The current word count of my Bulgarian book project exceeds 210.000. Compared this to the previous post, I kind of "overkilled" it, I guess.

Re: Do 17
I think you are a very lucky author not to be constantly reminded about the word count by your publisher! As far as I know, a book in the Osprey or Classic Colours series would be around 30,000 words; a 200-page, A4-size book could be 80,000 words (but a lot depends on the layout and the size/number of illustrations). I do remember that "Air War Italy 1944–45" was supposed to be 105,000 and the first draft came out at 150,000; we finally got it down to around 110,000, I think.

Re: Do 17
Thanks for the answers.
I will ask the publisher if reducing font size would be an acceptable solution to this "issue".

Re: Do 17
Dénes - I guess there is a difference between writing on commission to match a specified format for a series where the number of pages is set, as well as a ratio for photos/illustrations, by the publisher or if you research, collect and write freely first without limitations and then think about finding someone willing to publish what you've accomplished.
I'm not making any personal judgement related to the two approaches since I think there is room for both on the market and that they aim at different buyer categories. But likely you "overkilled it" to the immense joy and appreciation of us 50-100(?) worldwide nerds who will happily buy the book (knowing with sympathy that it likely was a financial loss for you) and then read the work in detail! :-) So by all means, keep writing! Hope you have photos to support it as well! |

Re: Do 17
Reducing font size is an excellent thing. I really loved the 2-volume set From Barbarossa to Odessa as it was filled with text, not empty space. Some Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust books are awful as the font is huge that in order to get the text within the page count the line spacing has been cut too narrow in relation to the font height.
It is also imperative to keep lines short (i.e. an A4 page is best with 3 columns, 2 is ok, but 1 is terrible). A very good layout example is Dennis Jenkins's Space Shuttle book. I, for one, prefer text over photos, especially if the photos are not of premium quality (e.g. in an aircraft close up photo the resolution is too low to show rivet lines) and show generic scenes (production line photos showing manufacturing and design features are excellent, but most frontline photos are simply uninteresting).
