Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
I'm looking for the complete code of Drewes' 110 G when Kdr III./NJG 1.
I can see "G9" and a "W" but not only is one letter missing but I can't figure out if the "W" is or not the individual letter of the machine. I suppose he still carried the flags under the cockpit like on his Bf 110 C. Thanks in advance. Last edited by CJE; 30th September 2015 at 10:44. |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
There is a colour profile in Osprey's German night fighter aces captioned as
Bf 110G-4 'G9+WD' of Oberleutnant Martin Drewes, Gruppenkommandeur III./NJG 1, Laon-Athies, March 1944 Another profile of a 'G9-WD' in "La chasse de nuit allemande 1939-1945" by Jean Cuny Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-4 du Groupe III/NJG 1, été 1944. Appareil de l'Oblt Martin Drewes (Alors 47 victoires) No flags visible under the canopy. |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
Thanks.
However, how can I trust a profile not based on photographs. Chris |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
It is certainly good policy to be sceptical of profiles unsupported by photographic evidence. However, since the letter 'D' was used by Stab III. Gruppe, it is unlikely to be anything else.

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
Chris,
more about the planes G9+WD and G9+MD flown by Martin Drewes you will find in Wings of the Black Cross Number Five from Eagle Editions. There is a colour profile of the G9+WD and it has no radar installation. On the photograph (also in the booklet) it's not visible, but as far as I know this info comes from Mr. Drewes direct. Cheers, Simon |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
Hi Chris,
There is a short article on Martn Drewes on the Hyperscale web site here: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/drewesmb_1.htm The author appears to have had direct contact with Martini Drewes (Lives in the same city). There is a profile and one photo (appears to be from the same shoot as yours) but does not show the code letters. Regards Michael |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
Hello;
When I talked with Drewes in 2009 he told me that his plane was G9+MD !!! He used other planes when his own was in maintenace. This letter " M " means Martin,he told me.He gained a special authorisation to use it. Eduardo. |

Re: Martin Drewes' Bf 110 G
In his autobiography "Sand und Feuer", Drewes states that his combat planes carried no victory symbols (except for the first 4 victories). Kill marks appeared only on planes he used for non-combat flights (liaison etc.)
HTH, Richard P.S.: Check out books on Drewes and other Luftwaffe pilots at http://neunundzwanzigsechs.de/main.php Highly recommended if you read German |
