Gerhard Loos III/JG54

Hi @ all,

my name is Christopher I am the grandson of Gerhard Loos, who was serving in the JG54. As he was KIA on march 06 1944 near of Bremen by a pilot of the 357th FG, he received the Knights Cross for 92 confirmed air victories only a few days before his death. Because he died before my father was born, I am interessted in every information i can get about him. Especially I am looking for people who might have known him or are still alive.

I am posting a picture of him(right person) and his mechanic (left person), his name is Roland, my father says he lives in Munich, but I have no second name so a search is difficult. But hopefully someone recognizes him or knows something.

I am really happy about Forums like this, you do a great job for people looking for their familymembers they had never a chance to get known.

Oberleutnant Gerhard Loos

Hello Christopher

Please send me your e-mail through a PM and I can send you what I have on your grandfather. It is not much, just a thumbnail biography based on Obermaier and what Wood lists of his victories but I hope it helps you. Your grandfather was particularly successful in July (19 victories) and August 1943 (54 victories) while serving with 1./JG 54 on the Eastern Front. Looking forward to corresponding with you.

Horrido!

Leo

Are you sure the picture shows your grandfather's mechanic. He is wearing an Army uniform and appears to be a recipient of the infantry assault badge.

Best Regards

Re: Gerhard Loos III/JG54

Wow, this is great, thanks for this list. I am not sure, but there is a gap of about five months, from his last kill until he got the Ritterkreuz, I am in contact with a guy who propably got this "missing" part. If that is true I will post it here.

I am not sure about the foto, its just what my father told me but he can be mistaken. But the backside of the foto says This is on the station at the departing with roland.

So propably it is in his hoemtown in Seestadl and Roland is just a friend out of the same city?

I have to ask my father about this.

Thank you guys for all the help here I really appreciate that.

Christopher

Re: Gerhard Loos III/JG54

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to update you a little bit. I have had a lot of help throughout the whole Forum thanks for all the guys that were working really hard to help me to answer some questions. I have now found out, that the former Air instructor of my grandpa might still be alive. I have his adress and phone number so I will try to get in contact with him the next days. I found out that several books are mentioning him with a small review of his last flight. I am still trying to find out what has happend since when he was gone to the western front. Some lists are showing 14 air victories for him but I can´t find a detailed list such as the one posted by Doug. One thing that happend to him is described in the Trautloff diary. He was hit by russian AAA his plane severly damaged and burning but he managed to get back to the airbase and got out with no injuries. Here is a pic showing him with Nowotny and the tail of the airplane damaged.

My question now is, the number on the tail of that plane, is that the so called Werknummer? Because I have some information that the plane involved in that incident should be 5480 but this doesn´t match with the number here on the foto. So i am looking for some more information if he was flying the plane with the number on its tail like the one shown on the picture or fotos with a plane thats "Werknummer" is 5480. I have further interest in fotos with a plane thats "Werknummer" is 411922 this was the last plane he flew on 06. march 1944 until he was shot down by J.C. Howell (I have contact to him too and he owns the original gun camera film!).

My grandpa is the right one on the foto with Nowotny just talking to him.

have a nice weekend all of you

Christopher

Oberleutnant Gerhard Loos

Hello Christopher

Rösipal's JG 54 loss list has the following:

19 January 1942: Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 5843) flown by Leutnant Gerhard Loos of 1./JG 54 hit in radiator by Flak, crash-landed burning at Ljuban airfield, 90% damage

There is just one problem - all information that I have seen, such as Obermaier, states that Loos did not join JG 54 until December 1942! I hope that someone else can explain where is the error.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Gerhard Loos III/JG54

Hello Christopher

First let me apologize for intruding, my father was in the USAAF stationed at Pearl Harbor,Hawaii. I have been trying for years to find out about his life in the USAAF.
The reason I am writing you is that I have been researching my family tree. My Great-great Grandfather Anton Loos came to America somewhere around 1850, with 3 sons (Wilhem,Ignatz(my Greatgrandfather), and Robert) and a daughter. There was another son who stayed in Germany. I was asking to see if any of these names might be familiar to you or if you are familiar with your family tree If so please let me know and thank you for your time and I hope your search is successfull in your quest for knowledge of your Grandfather Gerhard Loos.If you would like to get in touch with me my address is mrtloos@yahoo.com

Christopher, I am helping you in private now (see new PM with e-mail). Thought I wanted to bump this thread again must someone have questions or data, especially photographic material to Gerhard Loos.

From the left: Gerhard Loos, Kommodore Hubertus von Bonin, Walter Nowotny.

I will ask Hans-Ekkehard Bob if he was in contact with your grandfather.

All the best,
Horst
