Air combats of 1.9.1939: Polish and German version
I´m looking more info of Luftwaffe side about the "first shots" of WW2 on 1.9.1939.
According to wiki the very first air battle (?) on 1.9.1939 (clock time?) was when Stuka pilot Lt. Frank Neubert (I/Stg 2) surprised a PZL P 11 (M. Medwecki) and shot it down. The wingman of Mewcki (W. Gnys tried to revenge the loss by counterattack, but Neubert escaped to clouds. However, 20 minutes later Gnys managed to attack succesfully a pair of Do 17´s shooting both down. The biggest air battles of 1.9.1939 took place near Warsav, which was defended by Polish Pursuit Brigade. Here the official Polish version: "September 1st, 1939, at 6:30, report from the vantage point in Mława, about the bomber expedition heading on Warsaw, came to the Pursuit Brigade staff. Lt. Pawlikowski ordered the whole unit to take off. Two squadrons met over Legionowo, and at 7:00 attacked in the Bugo-Narew Area approx. 80 He-111 from LG 1 and KG 27 "Boelcke" in the cover of 20 Bf-110 from I(Z)/LG 1. About 154 aircraft took stubborn fight for 40 minutes. Enemy was caught first by Lt. Aleksander Gabszewicz's (tactical officer of IV/1 Fighter Squadron) flight. After exchange of fire between Gabszewicz, supported by Cpl. Andrzej Niewiara, and one He-111, damaged bomber headed north and tried to land in the field, but it crashed. In Wyszkow area, sec. Lt. Jerzy Palusinski alone attacked 12 Luftwaffe bombers, shooting down one, and damaging another. During this attack, he was wounded in hand, and his watch saved him from more serious injury. He made emergency landing near Kobyłka. First victory was also achieved by cpt. Adam Kowalczyk, IV/1 FS commander, , and cpt. Juliusz Frey. From 123 group, only 3 PZL P-7, engaged into the fight. Pilots from this squad attacked 7 He-111, and sec. Lt. Jerzy Czerniak with Cpl. Stanisław Widlarz took down one of them. There were losses also. Wounded private Bolesław Olewiński jumped from his burning P.11c, and Lt. Stanisław Szmejl landed with leaking fuel tank. Many planes were shot and damaged, and required repairs. About 12:00, for another spotted group of bombers, 2 flights from 112 FG were sent. A clash with 9 Do-17 started over Wilanów. After polish attack they turned back in East Prussia direction, but one of them, engaged by Lt. Stefan Okrzeja, exploded in air, with few of his remains stuck between the cylinders of winner's P.11. The second major clash occured in the Modlin area at 16:30. This time the Poles faced more than 30 He-111 and Do-17, 9 Ju-87, and 20 Bf-109 and 110. Sec. Jan Borowski managed to hunt Bf-109 piloted by oberst Henschke. Another Bf-109 was sent down by cadet Jerzy Radomski. Cadet Janusz Maciński was less lucky. He emergency landed near Sulejówek. Lt. Gabszewicz had to jump off his plane with parachute. While falling, he was attacked by Bf-110. With previous success of part of 123 FG, this time whole of unit took part in the fight. Squad was attacked by Bf-110, and commander Mieczysław Olszewski was hit in the first minutes of battle. His P.7 crashed near Legionowo. Sec. Lt. Stanisław Czternastek, sec. Lt. Feliks Szyszka, cadet Antoni Danek, had to rescue themselves, jumping with their parachutes. First of them landed safely, but two others were attacked by German fighters. Szyszka was hit 16 times, and after landing near Wisła, with locals help, he was transported to hospital. Moreover, sec. Lt. Erwin Kawnik, and Cpl. Henryk Flamme emergency landed near Zakroczyn in their heavily damaged P.7's. Enemies in this fight were Bf-110's from I(Z)/LG 1, escorting He-111 from KG 27 and LG 1 in their mission against Okęcie airport. Col. Leopold Pamuła (deputy commander of Pursuit Brigade) also took part in the battle. Due to the rupture communication with IV/1 FS, he arrived by car to Poniatowa and took P.11 from one of the pilots. In the clash with to Bf-109 he was shot down and wounded. He jumped with a parachute. Also private Zdzisław Horn was wounded, and he fainted after leaving the aircraft cocpit. Majority of German bombers didn't reach the capital, they threw bomb loads, and turned back to East Prussia. Only dozen of bombs were dropped on Warsaw. Over Praga, fight between two Bf-109 and Cpt. Gustaw Sidorowicz, commander of the 111 fighter group occured. One German fighter was propably shot down, but wounded and burned Sidorowicz was forced to land. During the whole day of fights, one pilot of Pursuit Brigade was killed, and 8 wounded. 10 aircraft were permanently lost, 24 more were severly damaged. At 20:00 brigade had only 20 planes ready for immediate takeoff. Pilots engaged about 230 clashes, shot down 12 Luftwaffe aircraft (of wich 4 were shared with 153rd fighter group pilots, who also took part in the afternoon fight). 5 more were shot propably, and further 10 enemy planes were damaged." German version of these combats and their loss records on 1.9.1939? Were there also other combats taking place in 1.9.1939 than those above? |
