2ndLt. Wendell F. Carrigan of 36th Fighter Group USAAF
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!
In the county of Marburg - Biedenkopf, Hessen, Germany, crashed on Febr. 13th. 1944 a P-47 of the 36th Fighter Group. The pilot, 2ndLt. Wendell Foster Carrigan kia when his aircraft crashed near the village Unterrosphe north of Marburg. He has flown a Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt", SerialNo.: 42-8580, when his aircraft hit by light flak and crashed. For our chronicle I`m looking for photographes of the pilot and his aircraft and also for more informations about his mission on this day. You can find all, which I researched at moment on the following homepage: http://fliegerschicksale.de.tl/13-.--Februar-1945.htm Thank you very much for your help. Best wishes from germany, Dirk |

Re: 2ndLt. Wendell F. Carrigan of 36th Fighter Group USAAF
Lt. Carrigan was lost on the 53rd Fighter Squadron's second mission (and last) of the day. The following is from the mission report: 12 a/c, 53 FS, take off 1345, over target 1415-1450. Flew over solid overcast to only hole in the area of Gottingen (G-729532), all bombs were dropped on the M/Y and R.R. junction with good results. A large fire was started which, no doubt, caused considerable more damage. No E/A, nor flak, were encountered. A/C landed 1625.
Lt. Carrigan was last seen pulling out D/B run and disappeared into a cloud formation at about 5,500 ft. This was over Gottingen, Germany. Radio contact had been made with him just before the run and nothing was wrong with he, nor the a/c at that time. A search was made after his disappearance was noticed, but he was not found. No parachutes were seen in the air or on the ground. MACR 12303 also covers his loss, time given for his last being seen is 1450. There is a write-up by a pilot on the mission which is basically the same as the above description, only he mentions one flak gun which was firing. Kent |
