Fw 190 D cowl flap question

Hi

I have been looking at my copy of the Japo, Fw 190 D volume 1, while i wait for volume two. I have noticed that the cowl flap infront of the starboard supercharger intake seems to be always in the closed position.

Was it locked closed to prevent blocking air to the supercharger? or is there another reason. I may have got it wrong and it may open like all the others but several different aircraft seem to show it closed. I can't seem to find mention of it being locked closed in any "D" books, but the photos seem to show that it was.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Ben

Re: Fw 190 D cowl flap question

Hi,

As far as I know, that part of the cowling was not really a flap but a simple panel. Another similar panel didn't move on the top of the "flap ring".

HTH,

Peter

Re: Fw 190 D cowl flap question

I was under the impression that the cowl flap in front of the supercharger intake did indeed open and close like the rest of the flaps, but after frontline use it was found to effect/alter throttle response and was eventually locked in the closed position.

I believe the best speed performance of the D-9 was found to be with the cowl flaps in a slightly open position, approx. 20%.

Regards,
Mike
