Hi Clint

Normally the MKKK Manshu aircraft are listed under the Manko MT-1 designation, presumably to differentiate between the actual airline MKKK and its factory where aircraft were built, overhauled etc.

The photo here is interesting and must be one of a set taken by the Kôkû Asahi reporter Komori Ikuo at Mukden airport in October 1942 and it shows M-305 with four Ju 86 and at least one more MT-1 (M-318) and some Super Universals.
Some of the best shots of the MKKK's Ju 86 aircraft were taken by him.

The Ki-93 crash is well known and I have seen photos of it. If they are exactly the same ones, I don't know.

Pity the 'Tabby' photo is so indifferent....

Hi Stig,


Thanks for the response. Yes, I should probably have used Manko MT-1 as the Eleftheriou's do so in their The Eagles of Manchukuo, which I guess is pretty definitive as far as the designations go.


I've seen other photos of the Ki-93 crash, but not the ones I posted, but my Japanese aircraft library is not extensive so it could be they've been published elsewhere.


Given your disappointment with the L2D here are some photos predominantly of Tachikawa Ki 54 aircraft in the Netherlands East Indies,though also a Ki 46 in US markings so hopefully also disappointing

First time I see single-seat Ki-79 (no cockpit cover)

I use to spell the company as Mansyu (I follow the Francillon book) while I notice Baeza does it your way... ....and don't show me the Japanese spelling please....

BTW Baeza claims 3710 were built between 1942-45.
Is that really possible?

Don Marsh and Peter Starkings give a total of 1342 Ki-79a/b and mention in the text a few Ki-79c/d were built in 1945. Now to my mind 1342 + a few does not equal 3710 二式高等練習機. Sorry I couldn't resist. However btw looking at the Japanese wiki entry for the production total they have 3710 too. But alas no source.

3710 sounds more than the whole Ki-27 production (I am lazy so I didn't look it up....)

Hi Stig,


The book is Imperial Japanese Army Flying Schools 1912-1945 published by Schiffer.


There seem to be a few sites that give 3710, but without knowing what the source for the figure is, its difficult to reach any judgement on the accuracy. At the moment we have two sources, the above and Baeza, both of which one could reasonably view as credible. So the true figure is? Well, alas difficult to say.

I didn't bother about that one. Someone said it was just full of useless colour drawings. What's your opinion?

1342 vs 3710 is quite a difference....the former figure sounds much more reasonable somehow.
