The first allied pilots "escape" from Portugal
In 1941 a Portuguese officer risked his career to build the first allied airmen “escape” line from Portugal. Hundreds of men would use it to leave internment in the next years. A story with espionage, diplomatic games and much more…
Sorry for the english and I hope you like it. http://landinportugal.blogspot.com/2...st-escape.html Best regards Carlos Guerreiro |

Re: The first allied pilots "escape" from Portugal
Nice article Carlos!
Question about the term "local GESTAPO" Do you literally mean local German agents, or figuratively Portuguese secret police agents?

Quote:
Roy Booth says that in Figueira da Foz was a Dutch guy that was - so the emabssy said - a Gestapo Agent. Latter I presume he assumes that the persuit was made by German Gestapo agent's. Portugal was a espionage paradise and men from all the German - and also british, american etc... - services were here. The country was even named Spy Land after the war by some agents... Just a curious note: the book "Casino Royal" from Ian Fleming (007 author) is based in his experiences in Casino Estoril, when he was in Portugal for a couple of days.... This is Roy Booth's story. I must admit that they were probably under surveillance by the germans. Other pilot's wish I was able to locate even had some "muscular dicussions"- as one put it - with them. The pursuit with shootings and so... well I look at that with some reserves. |
