HE59 lost on 8th August 1940
Did a HE59 of Seenotzentrale SZ Cherbourg get shot down on 8th August 1940?
I have a list of all supposed HE59 losses from July to November 1940, the list claims it was shot down by a Hurricane of 238 Squadron. Who was the pilot? |

Re: HE59 lost on 8th August 1940
If you mean who was the 238 Sqn pilot, it was Sqn Ldr Harold Fenton at 1340 hrs

Hi Chris, yes i did mean the 238 pilot. Thanks.
Another HE59 was also lost on 20th July, again claimed in the list as being shot down by 238 Squadron, any ideas as to the pilot's involved in that engagement? Was it Yellow section of 238? |

Quote:
To quote from his book re the Eighth of August : "During the scrap a few miles south of the Isle of White, Eric Turner, the 'A' Flight Commander was shot down. There was no rescue launch in the area so I went out to have a look for him - on my own, as all the others were being refuelled. I could not find any trace but, while searching, I spotted a German seaplane at sea level. I went down to attack, gave him a long burst but, being much faster, I overshot and his gunner must have got in a lucky one which cut an oil pipe. My windscreen was covered in black oil. I turned North but shortly afterwards my engine seized. Having so little height, I had to ditch rather than bail out." So in fact it was the HE59 that shot down the Hurricane! |

Re: HE59 lost on 8th August 1940
Hi, guys.
Have been trying to find a He 59 on the 08.08.1940, but haven't found one lost. Anyone have details on it? If not I think I will stop looking, and state that this was never damaged or lost, merely shot at. Regards, Andreas B |
