Unknown German loss 27.10.1940

Hi,

A bit of a needle in a haystack here.

At around 13.30 hours on October 27th 1940 a 218 Squadron Blenheim crew witnessed a 'aircraft' crashing into the sea off the coast of Holland. Investigating the 'splash' they found an aircraft upside down with a large black cross visible. While taking photos a German float plane arrived on the scene. The crew departed without engaging.

Is there any losses reported on this date, if so can the aircraft and unit be identified ?

TIA

Steve

A report on the day's wireless activity from TNA HW 13/28 that perhaps you can deduce something from, although it's a bit of a longshot.

Re: Unknown German loss 27.10.1940

Hi Nick,

Thank you for that. I have just checked the pilots log book, and he reports the aircraft as a Dornier 10, it could be Dornier 18, the ink as smudged.

Regards

Steve

No seaplanes lost that day and nothing else in Luftwaffe records is obvious as a match

1/506 lost a He 115 on the 26th off the east coast (either 0900 or 1900 hrs) crew came ashore after 25 hrs in a dinghy at Yarmouth . Their aircraft reported as being found by Luftwaffe recon. aircraft and sunk by aircraft gunfire . Could this have been the aircraft seen the next day by the Blenheim crew ? A bit of a long shot but nothing on the 27th .
