Ju-88 shot down near Brussels on 19/08/44

Hello,

on 19/08/1944 Fl/Lt Plisnier of 350 (Belgian) Squadron shot down a Ju-88 near Brussels. This was the first confirmed kill made by a Spitfire MkXIV. I'd like to know the unit of the destroyed Ju-88 and the names and fait of the crew.

Best regards,

Serge

Serge, the only listings I have are landing accident crashes by nightfighters and one by LG1 that says it was downed by a nightfighter.

Sure of the date and claim?

Well, looks like a case of mistaken ID. Me 410s were frequently mistaken for Ju-88s. Maj. George Preddy claimed 4 Ju-88s on 18-July-44 but the gun camera film clearly shows Me 410s. Hey, it had 2 engines and a big rudder!

Neither side was as good as ID'ing types as we are, today!

Hi,

Fw Karl Küster died on 20/08/1944 and was initially buried at Brussels (later transferred to the German War Cemetery at Lommel). Could he have been one of the crewmembers of the plane in question ?

Best regards

Luc

Hi Luc:

No such name listed on any of the Ju-88 losses, and, there are no 410 losses for the date. There is only 1 He 111 loss, but that's in Romania.

Of course, we are missing 1000s of damaged listings from 1944, so who knows?

John,

Thanks for the info.

It's possible that his death was not aircraft related.

best regards from Belgium

Luc

Re: Ju-88 shot down near Brussels on 19/08/44

Form 540 from Hawkinge and Form 540 from 350 Sqn both mention 19/08/1944 but a citation signed by Belgian Prime Minister H.Pierlot mentions 18/08/1944 as date, can this be the reason?

kind regards,

Serge

Hi !

On 18/08/1944 a Ju88 of NJG4 crashed near Sint-Truiden (St-Trond).
Could this be the plane in question ?

Best regards from another part of Belgium

Luc
