Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Good evening Jeremy,

great work. Thanks for sharing.
I've found a typo for the months of his kills #57-60 ('11' instead of '1').
Why didn't he score in Aug-Dec 1944 ?

Have a nice weekend,

Michael

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Thanks Michael

Good catch.

Interesting question and I can only guess that either the records for that period were missing or he genuinely had NO kills during that period. That seems unlikely however I do not believe he came anywhere near 136 kills let alone 100.

Unfortunately unless his flight logs or other supporting documentation ever come to light there won’t be anyway to determine additional victories during the period mentioned.

The mystery continues

Jeremy

Hi Gentlemen

The link previously posted to e-medals includes some detail on the kill claims for that missing period, as follows:

47 aerial victory confirmations. They are all issued by the Luftwaffe Personnel Department, and later the Supreme Command of the Luftwaffe. They are dated to Berlin, the first few between March 17 and November 4, 1942, the majority between October 25 and November 8, 1944. Three were signed by a Staff Captain, his name is indecipherable. All the others are signed by one person, no rank or position is given, the signature is indecipherable.

The individual claims are illustrated too.

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

I looked through the Abschussmeldungen on eMedals to Fassong and unfortunately they don’t shed any additional light on the later victories compiled in 1944.

The documents were issued in October and November 1944 but they reference/confirm victories he had in 1943 while still serving with JG51. So the search continues.

The silver lining is that the group is still there to use as reference and probably will be for the next 100 years, that group of documents is waaaaaay overpriced.

Cheers
Jeremy

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Wrong pics of him on the emedals documents group, that is not Fassong but the recon pilot Fritz Eckebrecht.

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Nothing in his personnel file either on late claims. The only numbers in there are;

30.11.43: 54 Luftsiege, 257 Frontflüge
21.04.44: 62 Abschüsse, 379 Frontflüge

Cheers,

John

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Good afternoon Gentlemen,

hmm...62 kills on 21Apr fits better with the data provided by Prien than with the list of Jeremy (and Johannes Mathews).
54 kills on 30Nov doesn't fit with any (secondary) sources I know.
The 136-kills-mystery continues.

Kind regards,

Michael

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Hi Michael

Did find an additional Russian claim for von Fassong, basically his staffels claims earlier on on the mikrofilms gave date and time only, just the not so simple task of matching them to a name, one of those names was von Fassong, acquired via an abschussmeldung of his.

Doesn't really answer your question about his total, but his last units claims are good on the mikrofilms until 24th December 1944, and he wasn't very successful at all around this time.

See attached

Kind Regards

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong

Good evening Johannes,

thanks for the update.
Sometimes the deaths of aces were announced in the newspaper along with their scores. I suppose that wasn't done with Fassong because so many died during "Bodenplatte", was it ?

Have a nice weekend,

Michael
