What was this part used for ? (Heinkel177)

good afternoon everybody,

here is a bracket from a He177,

we can read on it :
"Rauch Gerät
Erstesmal, Ziehen innen
Zweites mal, Ziehen aussen",

which would basically mean (correct me if I am wrong)

"smoke device, first time, pull inside, second time, pull outside"

What could it be ?

I thought of some device to open a trap to get rid of the smoke, but your opinion will be highly appreciated.

GC

So, it would be a smoke emettor on board the dinghy, that you trigger when aircraft searching arrive, to be seen on the sea ?

thanks et merci for the answer & drawing
