Re: Mystery Spitfire

Looks like this is a Spitfire of the Peruvian Air Force.

Regards,
Rudi.

Re: Mystery Spitfire

I think a late Mk.Vc of the French Air Force, ex USAAF, operating out of Corsica. I forget the GC number.....I/5?

Re: Mystery Spitfire

Hi,

Is the pilot known ?

I did think that the Spitfire could be either early post WW2 Greek or even Egyptian. the center and the outside ring seem a very close match colour wise, and from the overpainting look to be ex USAF aircraft.

Perhaps Spitfire International has an answer.

Alex

Re: Mystery Spitfire

The markings are in the style of GC I/7 Provence, carried whilst working up on the Spitfire Mk.V and Mk.IX, although it lacks the badge below the cockpit often seen. The dark blue in the roundel is typical of French roundels painted from US sources.

Peru had no Spitfires

The Greek Spitfires were supplied from RAF sources. It would be foolish to say never, but it is unlikely that they received any ex-USAAF machines.
